New window installation
Installing a window where there was none, or in a bigger opening, costs more than a straight swap because the wall is part of the job. In a block house that means saw-cutting the opening, setting a lintel to carry the wall above, and patching the stucco. In a framed addition it is far simpler.
| Job | Estimate | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Window in an existing framed opening | $700–$1,800 | Additions and remodels where the rough opening is already built |
| New opening cut in a block wall | $2,500–$6,500 | Saw cut, lintel, window, stucco patch; engineering if the wall needs it |
| Opening enlarged | $1,500–$4,000 | Wider or taller than the old window, block or frame wall |
| Bay or bow window | $2,800–$7,500 | Projecting unit with its own roof or seat board |

Cost per square foot, as a cross-check
Impact windows are sometimes compared by the size of the opening. National and Florida guides put installed impact glass at roughly $55–$100 per square foot. A 36 by 60 inch single-hung is 15 square feet, which works out at about $825–$1,500, in line with the per-window range above. A 72 by 60 inch picture window is 30 square feet, or roughly $1,650–$3,000. That is arithmetic for comparing quotes, not a way we price.
What changes the price on a St. Pete house
- The wall. Block and stucco take more work to open and patch than frame walls, and older bucks are often rotten behind the trim.
- Distance from salt water. Waterfront and island homes call for coastal-grade finishes and stainless fasteners.
- Size and shape. Oversized, arched and custom shapes cost far more than standard sizes.
- Second-story and condo access. Ladders, lifts and association rules add time.
- Flood zones. In the beach towns, improvement costs can count toward FEMA's 50 percent rule, which can affect what work is allowed and when.
- Historic properties. A locally designated house needs approval before windows change, and the approved product may cost more.
Why two window quotes for the same house can be thousands apart
- Insert versus full-frame replacement. Sliding a new window inside the old frame is cheaper and quicker, but it leaves the old frame and any rot behind it in place.
- Different products. Two "impact windows" can be rated to very different design pressures. Compare the approval numbers, not the brand names.
- Shutters left out. A cheap non-impact quote that does not mention shutters is not a complete price for a St. Pete house.
- Permit and stucco. Check whether the permit, stucco patching, interior trim and haul-away are included, or added later.

Cost questions
How much does it cost to replace all the windows in a St. Pete house?
For a typical home with 12 to 16 openings, an estimated $8,000–$15,000 in non-impact vinyl, which still needs shutters, or $15,000–$30,000 for impact windows throughout. Large picture windows and sliding doors push it higher.
Why do impact windows cost so much more?
Laminated glass, heavier frames, more anchors and testing for Florida Product Approval. The usual gap is somewhere around 40–60% over the same window in non-impact glass. Against that, you are not buying shutters.
Is the permit included in your price?
Yes. The City of St. Petersburg permit and the inspection are part of every installation quote, shown on its own line so you can see it.
Do you charge for the measure or the quote?
No. The visit, the measurements and the written quote are free, and there is no obligation.
